From 1942 through 1944, the United States Army used Camp Kearns as a basic training facility and overseas replacement depot. The 5643-acre site, located at the intersection of 4700 South and 4800 West Streets and continuing south, has been redeveloped and is currently occupied by various residential areas, retail operations, and light industrial activity.

Camp Kearns consisted of a large containment area, a hospital, and a post headquarters area. The camp also contained a motor pool section, two small arms firing ranges, and a tear gas training section. In August 1946, portions of the leased property were declared as no longer necessary and returned by the government to its various owners. In January 1947, the remainder of the base was declared as surplus and turned over the War Assets Administration for disposal.

In the spring of 2003, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and its agents visited the site. Based on the site visit, records researched, and interviews conducted, it was determined that no adverse or potentially adverse environmental hazards exist related to Department of Defense use. As a result, the site has been recommended for No Further Department of Defense Actions Indicated (NDAI) Status.
